What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into your phone. It works exactly like a traditional plastic SIM card, but instead of swapping a physical chip, you scan a QR code or tap a link to download your plan directly onto your device.

With SaundersRoam, your eSIM gives you a local or regional data connection the moment you land at your destination - no hunting for a SIM shop at the airport, no fiddly trays, and no risk of losing your home SIM.

How is it different from a physical SIM?

A physical SIM is a small card that slots into your phone. An eSIM does the same job digitally. Your phone stores the eSIM profile in its built-in chip, so you can have multiple plans loaded at once and switch between them without opening the SIM tray.

Key things to know

  • Your eSIM is delivered instantly by email after purchase - there is nothing to post.
  • Most modern smartphones released from 2019 onwards support eSIM. Check our compatibility article if you are unsure.
  • You can install your eSIM before you travel and activate it when you arrive.
  • Your regular phone number stays active on your physical SIM (or primary eSIM) while you use the SaundersRoam data plan on the second line.

Tip: Think of it like having two SIM cards in one phone - your home number for calls and texts, and your SaundersRoam eSIM for affordable data abroad.
